Fairbanks school nurse retiring after decades of helping kids
FAIRBANKS — If you walk a day in Cathy Nichols’ size 3 gray and pink Nike tennis shoes, be ready to deal with broken bones, diabetic seizures, tummy aches or lice. Sore throats. Tuberculosis tests. Complaints about classmates who aren’t being nice.
Nichols is a school nurse. The 70-year-old has been treating schoolchildren who live on either side of the Johansen Expressway between University Avenue and College Road for 20 years. Last year, she was selected as an extra special support staff person of the month by the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.
