Scholarship Alert: Hutchison Hawk Warner Mentch Secures $180,000 scholarship

CONGRATULATIONS to Hutchison High School senior, Mr. Warner Mentch for being awarded $180,000.00 from the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship, Marine Corps option.
Warner is the first individual from Fairbanks, Alaska to win this scholarship since 2010.
The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship, Marine Corps option, looks at the entire individual, rather than just academic or extracurricular success. They look for young men and women who have the potential to lead United States Marines in the most stressful situations. Mr. Warner Mentch was evaluated and compared to his peers based on imative, integrity, leadership, academics, physical fitness, and community involvement. This scholarship allows him to be a Midshipman while attending a regular university, but requires that he maintain a high level of physical fitness and participate in Naval science, ethics, management, and maritime warfare courses.
While in college, Mr. Warner Mentch will attend Officer Candidate School in Quantico, VA where he will learn how to lead United States Marines and inspire others. He will be tested on moral, mental, and physical qualities in the most demanding military officer training that the United States has to offer. Upon conclusion of college, Mr. Warner Mentch will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.
Applicants for this scholarship were competing from Alaska, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, California, Washington, and South-Western Wyoming. Of all the applicants submitted from these states, only 50% met the qualifications. The standards to win this scholarship are so high that only 15% of those qualified were selected to receive this scholarship.
Mr. Warner Mentch is graduating with the class of 2021 from Hutchison High School with a weighted GPA of 3.86, an ACT score of 27, and a first-class Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test consisting of pull ups, timed crunches, and a 3-mile run.
Mr. Warner Mentch has been a volunteer apprentice of Mark Knapp Knives, learning metal smithing, since the 8th grade. He currently assists his Information Technology teacher at Hutchison High School in tutoring and assisting other students in understanding the concept. Mr. Warner Mentch was a team member of the United States Academic Decathlon (ACADECA) team in 2019, where he earned many awards for Hutchison High School. As he is an experienced programmer, he has also volunteered numerous hours with local businesses in the Fairbanks community to improve their business websites.
Mr. Warner Mentch is an incredible young man with a bright future ahead of him.
