Student Black History Month Contest begins

In celebration of Black History Month, the NAACP and Fairbanks North Star Borough School District invite all K-12 students to participate in the annual Black History Month Contest. This year’s theme is “Game Changers” and entries celebrate African American academic, cultural, technological and scientific achievement.


Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each grade category. Entries must be submitted to the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, EEO Department, 520 Fifth Avenue, Fairbanks by 4:30 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 22.


Contest Rules


Grades K-3: Label and color three (3) pictures of notable African Americans.

Grades 4-6: Make a poster featuring at least five (5) African Americans that made a difference in our lives.


Grades 7-8: Submit a typewritten, original, 150-word essay using this year’s theme and illustrate it with an original drawing. Include in your essay a notable African American.


Grades 9-12: Submit a typewritten, original, 250-word essay using this year’s theme. Include a notable African American in your essay and illustrate it with an original drawing.
