Subject: Randy Smith Middle School Interim Principal Selected For 2024-25 School Year

FAIRBANKS–The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is pleased to announce that Liesl Wietgrefe has been selected as the interim Principal of Randy Smith Middle School starting the 2024-25 school year.  

Liesl Wietgrefe began her career in education in 2000 as a private music teacher. After her graduation from college, she began teaching in the public schools in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. Liesl has held multiple positions in the public schools over the past 20 years. She began as an Elementary General Music Teacher at Hunter Elementary. She transitioned to Randy Smith Middle School to become the Band, Orchestra, and Choir Director. In 2008, she accepted a position at West Valley High School as the Band and Steel Drum Director and ended her time there by adding Choir to her class load. She finished her teaching experience as an Itinerant Elementary Band teacher at the three North Pole area elementary schools from 2015-2021. She earned her Master’s in Educational Leadership in 2021 and accepted a position as Assistant Principal at West Valley High School where she has enjoyed working with staff, students, and families for the past three years.

“Ms. Wietgrefe has been a leader in our district for many years, and I am excited for her to return to Randy Smith Middle School in this role,” said Sarah Gillam, assistant superintendent. “She is a thoughtful and intentional administrator, and I look forward to seeing her continue to serve in our school communities.”

Principal Wietgrefe shared,“My early teaching days in this district were at Randy Smith Middle School and I am excited to return. I experienced great collegiality and support as a teacher in that building and am excited to continue to cultivate a similar experience for staff. Additionally, I am looking forward to working with families during the exciting and transformative years of middle school.”
