Subject: West Valley High School Principal Selected For Next School Year

FAIRBANKS–The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is pleased to announce that Mark Winford has been selected as the permanent Principal of West Valley High School starting the 2024-25 school year.  

Mark began his educational journey as a high school English teacher in Oak Harbor, Washington. After ten years as a teacher, Mark moved to Alaska in 2008 where he served as an assistant principal for five years at West Valley High School. In 2013, Mark became Principal at North Pole Elementary, where he has served the school community for the last ten years. For the 2023-24 academic school year, Mark has served as Interim Principal at West Valley High School.

“Mark is a proven leader in our district with a long track record of leadership and dedication to educational excellence,” said Sarah Gillam, Assistant Superintendent. “He brings a wealth of experience to this role, and I am very excited for him to continue the work he has started with the school community this year.”

Principal Winford shared, “I am so thankful to continue my work at West Valley High School. I went here as a student, and my three children recently graduated from here. I was raised and still live in the West Valley community. The administrative team and the staff have done excellent work this year moving the school forward, and I am incredibly excited about the potential and possibilities for the future.”
