District Hosts Department of Defense Education Activity Regional Conference

The Teaching and Learning Department recently hosted the DoDEA Pacific Rim Regional Conference in Fairbanks.

The conference was held at Pikes Lodge and brought over 50 visitors from a variety of states in the NW and SW regions of the lower 48. All participating districts are recipients of DoDEA grants and attended training on how to manage their grants and how to write future DodEA grant applications. It was a great event for the participants and for positive exposure for the Fairbanks community.

Board of Education President Chrya Sanderson attended the two-day conference including one of the sessions breaks, "Mascot Mania." District employees in costumes were Anderson/Crawford Principal Teresa Lesage (Thunderbird), North Pole Elementary Principal Mark Winford (Husky), North Pole High Counselor Martha Hood (Patriot).

Another training break included a unique Alaska presentation by Trail Breaker Kennels.

Tekla Butcher-Monson, General Manager and Lead Tour Guide of Trail Breaker Kennels, introduced participants to the history of sled dogs in Alaska and her family's long history of success in dog racing. Tekla is the daughter of renowned sled dog musher Susan Butcher, four-time Iditarod winner and second woman to win the Iditarod race in 1986. The presentation included a time to meet and greet a couple of the sled dogs from the Trail Breaker crew.

Thanks to all who made this conference possible!
