Subject: North Pole Middle School Principal

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is pleased to announce Rich Harrelson as the new Principal for North Pole Middle School starting the 2023-24 school year.

Rich began his educational career when he moved from Seattle to Alaska in 2012. He taught and coached middle and high school in the villages of Togiak and Koliganek before moving to Soldotna High School to become the school's interventionist in 2015. Rich has taught multiple subjects, college level, and CTE classes. Rich earned a MS in Mathematics Education and MA in Educational Leadership during this time. In June of 2020, Rich moved to Fairbanks to become an Assistant Principal at Lathrop High School.

“Rich has served the Lathrop community well over the past several years. I look forward to him taking his skills and abilities to the North Pole Middle School students, families, and staff,” said Karen Melin, Chief School Administrator.

Rich shared, "I am humbled to be selected as the next Principal of North Pole Middle School. I hope to inspire students much like others have inspired me when I was a student. I believe building and fostering relationships with students, staff, and the community is an important key to success. I came to Alaska planning to stay for one year but never left. I love everything about Alaska and have met some incredible people along this journey. I look forward to making new friends and becoming a part of the North Pole family."
