Press Release: Charges Against Former District Employee

FAIRBANKS - At the end of March, the school district was notified by law enforcement of pending child pornography charges against substitute teacher Reuben Spencer. The district immediately blocked school access and terminated Spencer. Spencer was indicted on March 29 and charged with the distribution and possession of child pornography.

Spencer was hired in 2018 as a substitute teacher. As is the practice for all new hires at the school district, a background check is completed that includes fingerprinting and review of an FBI database. Spencer’s background check results showed no prior criminal convictions.

District records show that in the past year Spencer has worked only in high schools.

Student safety is the district’s highest priority. If a parent or student has any information regarding this investigation, we encourage them to call the Alaska State Troopers at (907) 451-5100, Fairbanks Police Department at (907) 450-6500, or the FBI at (907) 452-3250. Parents and students may also contact school district Title IX Coordinator Allison Baldock at (907) 452-2000 x11466.
