Press Release: Retention Bonus for Special Education Staff
FAIRBANKS - The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District (FNSBSD) Special Education department is addressing the special education hiring shortage through a one-time retention bonus, training opportunities, and tuition reimbursement.
To address special education hiring challenges, as well as the limited availability of training for special education professionals, the Special Education department has implemented a number of initiatives to recruit, train, and retain special education staff. Staff in the Special Education department who completed the entire 2021-22 work year and who have committed to returning for the 2022-23 school year, will receive a one-time $500 retention bonus. The retention bonus will be available for educators, support staff, and non-represented staff, but will exclude administrators.
“The Special Education department’s service to students relies wholly upon an amazing staff,” said Special Education Executive Director Derek Coryell. “Students truly benefit from employees with job experience and training. There is clear value in retaining our highly trained staff and providing opportunities for them to continue to grow professionally.”
In addition to the retention bonus, special education staff will have training opportunities and coaching support. The Special Education department has also partnered with Chadron State University to support special education paraprofessionals who want to earn a special education training credential. With available grant funds, tuition reimbursement is available for this or any program leading to a teaching or related service certificate.
