School Closure Update from Superintendent | March 2024

Date: Wednesday, March 20, 2024
Subject: School Closure Update

Dear district families and staff,

The school board decided last night during their regular meeting to close Ben Eielson Jr/Sr High, effective at the end of this school year. At this time, the board does not intend to close any additional schools this year. Next school year, as part of the larger process of the school board’s work on the district’s new strategic plan, additional school closures may be part of the conversation.

I recognize the closing of Ben Eielson Jr/Sr High is incredibly hard news for impacted students, families, and staff. This wasn’t an easy choice for the school board and I know the deep sense of loss and uncertainty it may cause families and staff. While school closure is extremely challenging, the long-term goal is to provide better and more efficient services for students. Additional information will be forthcoming and what the closure and transition process will look like for those affected.

I want to acknowledge the incredible ways the Ben Eielson community showed up to advocate, and I’m committed to ensuring our Ben Eielson students have quality education opportunities. Work has already begun with North Pole Middle and North Pole High to ensure transitioning students will be welcomed and set up for success in their new schools.

The school board will finalize the FY25 Recommended Budget this evening, March 20, during a special meeting at 5:30pm. We will share more details about the budget after it is adopted.

This is a difficult time, but together, we will navigate these changes and continue to provide a quality education for all our students.

Sincerely,

Dr. Luke Meinert, Superintendent
