School Board regular meeting start time changed
Beginning in January 2019, regular meetings of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Board of Education will start an hour earlier at 6 pm. This change was approved at the Oct. 2 school board meeting.
The goal of changing the start time to 6 pm is to make the meetings and business of the school board more accessible to school district stakeholders and community.
Regular school board meetings take place on Tuesday nights, almost always a school night. Often there are students at meetings participating in musical performances, receiving awards and recognitions, and giving public testimony. Many of the school district stakeholders are students and parents of students who may struggle with attending or participating in late night meetings during the week. The public feedback the school district received was in support of an earlier start time.
In addition to attending a meeting in person, our community has several options for monitoring the school board regular meetings.
The school district provides live video stream of the full regular school board meetings at streaming.k12northstar.org. The same video stream is also broadcast on GCI cable channel 14.
The regular school board meetings will continue to air on KUAC public radio. The first hour of the meetings, from 6 pm until 7 pm, will be broadcast on KUAC3, a digital radio channel available online at kuac.org/live-streams or via the NPR mobile app available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play.
Beginning at 7pm, the broadcast of the meeting in progress will switch over to KUAC 89.9 FM. Starting at 7 pm, the meeting broadcast will be available on the 89.9 FM public radio channel, in addition to the KUAC live streams on the website and through the NPR app on the KUAC-FM channel.
The audio file of public meetings is also posted on the school district website, usually within 24 hours of the meeting. https://www.k12northstar.org/Page/6873
Start times of school board special meetings remain the discretion of the board and will be determined when the board schedules a special meeting.
