Superintendent Search: Finalists Update on March 29, 2021
March 29, 2021 - For Immediate Release:
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Board of Education is pleased to announce that three individuals have accepted invitations to interview as finalists in the search for a new superintendent. The Board will interview the finalists on April 10, 2021, if possible, in-person or alternatively via ZOOM. Virtual town-hall forums with the candidates have been scheduled for staff and community stakeholders on March 30 & 31, 2021. Interviews will be held in open session.
The Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB) was contracted to conduct and facilitate the search for the next Superintendent.
The Board’s finalists are:
- Justin Barnes – is currently the Superintendent of Schools in Anaconda, Montana (2018 to present) and was previously the Superintendent in Cascade, MT (2013-2018). He served two years as principal/superintendent of Marion Public Schools before that. He received his B.S. in Kinesiology/history from Texas A&M, his Masters in educational leadership from Midwestern University, and just completed his doctorate in Educational Leadership from Northcentral University.
- Vickie Cartwright – is currently the Superintendent of the Oshkosh Area School District, the 11th largest school district in Wisconsin (2018 to present). Previous to her superintendency in Oshkosh, Ms. Cartwright spent 15 years with the Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, FL. In that district, she served most recently as Associate Superintendent for Exceptional Student Education. Her experience spans assistant principal to central office administration. Ms. Cartwright has a Bachelors in music education from the Univ. of Florida, an M.S. in Music Education, an E.Ds. in Educational Leadership, and a Doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision from the Univ. of Southern Mississippi.
- Corey Weiss — is currently the Special Programs Director for the Copper River School District, AK (2019-2021). He served for a year as the Superintendent of the Kashunamiut School District in Western Alaska (2018-2019). Prior to that as a K-12 principal in the Lower Yukon School District in Kotlik and Pilot Station villages. Dr. Weiss began his educational career as a curriculum specialist, principal, and teacher in two Texas school districts. Dr. Weiss holds a Doctor of Education in Transformational Leadership from Concordia University, Masters of Education in Educational Leadership from West Texas A&M University, and a B.A. in Political Science and History from Texas Tech University.
Dr. Jeff Perry was initially selected as a finalist to interview but has withdrawn his application for consideration.
The new Superintendent is expected to start on or before July 1, 2021.
