School principal changes for 2019 - 2020 school year
Four school district schools will have a change in principal for the 2019-2020 school year. Pearl Creek and Ticasuk Brown Elementary Schools have completed the hiring process for new permanent principals. North Pole High School and Tanana Middle School will have interim principals for the 2019-2020 school year.
Shawna Henderson has been selected as the permanent principal for Pearl Creek Elementary School. Henderson has served as the interim principal at Pearl Creek for the 2018-2019 school year. Henderson served as principal of Ticasuk Brown Elementary for five years. Prior to that she was assistant principal at Arctic Light Elementary and a districtwide RTI facilitator.
“Shawna has had a very positive experience at Pearl Creek this year, and I am so pleased the committee selected her as the permanent principal,” said Superintendent Karen Gaborik in an email announcement.
Bev Kokrine has been selected as the permanent principal for Ticasuk Brown Elementary. Kokrine has over 20 years of experience as educator and community leader. She currently serves as assistant principal to both Ticasuk Brown and Arctic Light Elementary Schools. Previously, she was a teacher at Ticasuk Brown Elementary for 14 years and also taught at Nordale, Midnight Sun, and Woodriver. Kokrine has also held education and leadership positions with the Fairbanks Native Association, Tanana Chief’s Conference, and Doyon, Limited.
“Mrs. Kokrine has deep roots in our community and I look forward to her leadership as our newest elementary school principal,” Gaborik stated in an email to Ticasuk Brown families and staff.
On Monday, April 22, North Pole High School Principal Sherry McKenzie announced she will be retiring at the end of this school year. An interim principal will be selected for the 2019-2020 school year and the full hiring process for a new permanent principal will begin after winter break.
An interim principal will also be selected for Tanana Middle School for the 2019-2020 school year and the full hiring process for a new permanent principal will begin after winter break. Principal hiring committees include representatives from certified staff, support staff, parents, Ft. Wainwright, the district Diversity Committee and the Fairbanks Native Association.
