Alaska Reads Act - Virtual Town Hall
There are some important changes coming next year to Kindergarten through third grade classrooms and the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is working to make sure that all families are aware of the changes.
The Alaska Reads Act was passed in June 2022 and includes a requirement for a district reading intervention program. The goal of the Alaska Reads Act is to support all students reading on grade level by the end of third grade.
The Alaska Reads Act will impact every student in Kindergarten through third grade. It includes a requirement for a district reading intervention program. That means K-3 students will be assessed with a literacy screener three times per year to determine areas of proficiency. Students who are identified as being below proficient will receive an individualized Reading Achievement Plan (RAP). Students who have a RAP will receive additional reading instruction outside of core instruction time.
Please join us for a Virtual Town Hall meeting on May 16, 2023 to learn more about how this new law will impact your child.
