Kindergarten Information
Welcome!
Kindergarten is an exciting first step in your child’s formal education. The district welcomes new parents and strives to make the enrollment process as simple as possible. To enroll in kindergarten, children must be 5 years old on or before September 1. There are no exceptions.
Full Day Kindergarten
Kindergarten is available during regular school hours at all elementary schools. A full day schedule offers opportunity for structured play time, free time, rest, as well as a wide variety of enriching activities.
Developmental needs for children adjusting to a full day of school will be taken into consideration. Please look for information from your child's school and work with your child's teacher.
Kindergarten Eligibility
How old does a child have to be to enter kindergarten?
A child who is five (5) years of age on or before September 1 may enter a public school kindergarten. There are no exceptions or appeal process. (School Board Policy 1021.2-Under Age and A.S.14.03.080 (d)).
Can my child enroll in kindergarten if their birthday is after September 1?
No, the school district follows state laws and has chosen not to allow children born after September 1 to enter kindergarten.
Can my child enroll in kindergarten if they were enrolled in another school?
If a child was legally enrolled in the public school of another district or state immediately preceding the move to the Fairbanks School District, the child shall be admitted to the Fairbanks school (A.S.14.03.080 (e)).
First Grade Eligibility
How old does a child have to be to enter first grade?
A child who is six (6) years of age on or before September 1 may be admitted to first grade. There are no exceptions or appeal process. (School Board Policy 1021.2 – Under Age and A.S.14.02.080(d)).
Can my child skip first grade and go immediately to second grade?
Acceleration can only be considered if a student meets the age requirements for entering kindergarten and first grade. A student who meets the age requirements would follow the protocol listed in School Board Policy 983.2 &1022
Enrollment Checklist
Bring these important documents to ensure a speedy enrollment:
- Birth Certificate
A birth certificate is required for students entering kindergarten. - Proof of Immunization
- Proof of Residency
Utility bills such as phone, water or electric
