Brief Summary of Programs and Schools
The Fairbanks School District has 6 public charter schools: Boreal Sun, Chinook, Discovery Peak, Effie Kokrine, Star of the North, and Watershed. These schools serve many different grade levels and each one has a unique school culture and exciting way to meet the needs of students and their families.
The comprehensive school counseling program advocates and provides support for maximum student achievement in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social growth. School counselors work with parents, educators, and the community to provide developmentally appropriate and comprehensive services that meet the needs of all students in order for them to become productive members of an ever-changing global society.
Fairbanks BEST Homeschool
BEST is a school without walls where parents bear the primary responsibility for the management of their children’s education. It is a nonsectarian partnership between students, parents, professional staff, and community members where families and staff work together to customize an education for their children. Students are assigned a certified education specialist who is knowledgeable of various curricula, courses, resources, and learning styles as well as BEST policies and FNSBSD requirements. There are two options for students, one being the Homeschool Program, where students K-12th receive an allotment for purchasing curriculum materials of their choice that align with an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and state Grade Level Expectations (GLE’s.)The other is an Online Learning Program where Students 9-12th enroll in a minimum of four courses , a fully accredited, online learning program with highly qualified and certified teachers and 24/7 technical support. Students in both programs may enroll in up to two classes at local district schools and are eligible to participate in athletics, music programs, and other extra-curricular activities at their attendance area schools according to district/state guidelines and without withdrawal from their allotment (Homeschool Program).
Golden Heart Academy
Golden Heart Academy is a school for youth who are in treatment or detention at the Fairbanks Youth Facility. While institutionalized, students continue working towards earning a high school diploma and, through community partnerships, are also able take classes in culinary arts, small engine repair, First Aid/CPR, and the Construction Academy.
School nurses connect health care and education by providing services that promote the health and well-being of children and minimize barriers to learning. Professional school nurses use their expertise to provide acute, chronic, and emergency care for students. School nurses prevent, monitor, and control communicable diseases and screen for other conditions that interfere with academic achievement. School nurses promote health and safety by advocating for health care and a healthy school environment. School nurses are liaisons between the school, the family, and the community.
Social Service Managers
Social Services Managers (SSMs) support students and families who experience barriers to school success. SSMs strive to connect home, school, and community resources. They serve students and their families to improve educational, social and vocational outcomes. SSMs promote school stability and success through partnerships with educators, families, students, and communities. They collaborate with schools and families to identify the students’ needs, develop strategic interventions and implement plans to enhance social emotional wellbeing and improve academic performance.
