Hunter Elementary Counselor Page
With the information that school will be closed for the remainder of this school year, I created a Virtual School Counseling Tab that has links to resources that are avaialble in the Fairbanks community and information about weekly zoom check-ins for students. If you have a specific need, please email me at email@example.com. These are trying times, but we are here for each other!
For community resources please check out the link below:
Hello! My name is Sylvia Church and I am the School Counselor at Hunter Elementary. This is my 3rd year as a school counselor, and first year at Hunter! I am so excited to build relationships with students, parents, staff, and the community!
Throughout the year I will offer weekly classroom guidance lessons that discuss academics, career exploration, and social emotional development. In addition to classroom lessons, I am available to meet with students individually, facilitate small groups, and touch base with parents and families.
School counselors are not able to provide therapeutic counseling services to students in school, but do work with students and families in challenging times, providing a safe place in the school and communicating/coordinating with other staff as needed. School counselors can also help connect families with district and community resources. The school counselor’s office is a safe place for students to come when they need help working through problems they might be having, whether academic or social/emotional.
On a personal note, I was born and raised in Olympia, WA. I completed my undergraduate degree at University of Washington- Tacoma and my graduate degree at University of Alaska- Fairbanks. My husband and I moved to Fairbanks, Alaska on a whim 6 years ago… and we are still loving it!! I love spending time with my 4 dogs and enjoy spending time with family, friends, reading, and exploring!
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns- or just to say hello! I am looking forward to an amazing school year! :)
