Denali Elementary Counselor Page
Thank you for checking out the Denali Elementary School Counselor's Page. My name is Max Wortman. This marks my 18th year as Denali's school counselor. I would like to share a little bit about myself and some of the services available through the counseling program.
I was born and raised in Highmore, South Dakota. I received a Bachelors of Science in Education with majors in English and Psychology from the University of South Dakota. I taught English and Psychology for three years in South Dakota before moving to Alaska. My first teaching job in Alaska was in Kaltag, Alaska where I taught many subjects I also taught Middle School Reading and Language arts in Kodiak, Alaska.
I completed a Masters Degree in Education, Counseling at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. I began my counseling career as a child and adolescent specialist for the Railbelt Mental Health and Addictions program. I served children in the communities of Nenana, Anderson, Healy, and Cantwell. I joined the staff at Denali Elementary as the school counselor in the fall of 2000.
I provide a comprehensive school counseling program at Denali. I deliver bi-monthly classroom guidance lessons to students at Denali. Classroom lessons focus on school success and academic achievement, personal and social development, and safety. I also guide students in various groups that may focus on specific needs of individuals in a small group setting. Some of these groups focus on friendships, social skills, divorce and families, and anger management. If there is a need for a focus group I try to accommodate and serve those needs through small groups. I also provide crisis intervention and individual counseling on an "as needed" basis. I am also available to parents for referrals, support, guidance, and problem solving.
We have very generous community partnerships that provide for our families at Denali. I coordinate the Panther Pantry. The Pantry can provide snacks for the weekend for families in need. I send snacks home on Friday for these families. The Pantry is supported by the congregation of the True North Church and Northrim Bank. I also have school supplies for students who have just moved to the area or for families who are in need. School supplies have been donated by the residents of Raven's Landing.
I would like to welcome you to the Denali family. Please stop by my office, room 119, to say hi or share concerns you may have.
