2015-2016 Art Reflections Competition
Let Your Imagination Fly…
Is your Joy student a talented artist or musician? Does he like to write literature or make films? Does she enjoy dance or photography? If so, consider finding out if he or she would like to enter this year’s Art Reflections competition. All Joy students are eligible to participate in this nationwide competition in six different categories: Dance Choreography, Musical Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, Film Production and Literature. This year’s theme is “Let Your Imagination Fly….”
Entries are due Tuesday, November 24th by 3:30 in the school office. All Joy participants will receive special recognition for their efforts in the competition during Joy’s Annual Craft Night, December 11th from 5:00 – 7:30 in the Gym. Special Recognition is at 6:15pm. During this event entrants will also find out if their art moves onto district!
Winning Joy entries will go to our district-wide PTA council for judging at that level. Those winners will be sent to the Alaska state competition, which will forward several winners on to the national level. Award recipients last year at the national level received cash prizes as well as recognition and display of their work at the Department of Education in Washington, DC. For more information about this national competition, see http://www.pta.org/programs/ArtsinEducation.cfm?navItemNumber=510.
For entries to be eligible for competition, they must include a fully completed student entry form and a consent form. Note that guardian/parental signatures are required on these forms. Without them student entries will not be judged. These forms are included in the packet of materials available in the school office. Entries must reflect this year’s theme, and you should emphasize to your child the importance of the artist’s statement on the entry form, where the child describes the artwork and how it represents the theme. Students may use the lower back side of the page to continue the statement, as there is not adequate room on the front page. This statement is given considerable weight in the judging rubric, so remind your child of its importance.
There are special requirements for entries, so be sure to read the rules for each category and comply for your submission to be considered. For photography, visual arts and literature, the artwork itself must comply with the special rules on size and type of submissions. For music, a CD recording will be submitted following special requirements; and for dance and film production, a DVD will be submitted following special requirements. All of the rules and regulations are found on the entry forms available in the school office, and I am here to answer your questions, so do not hesitate to contact me:
