Library Program & Staffing

The districtwide library media coordinator provides leadership and oversight for the district's library media program. They are responsible for ensuring equitable access to resources, facilitating professional development for library staff, and aligning library services with district curriculum goals.

Primary tasks include, but are not limited to:

• planning, developing, implementing, and providing oversight to all functions of the Library Media Services division of the Teaching & Learning Department
• ensuring quality delivery of services including: library policies and procedures, staff development, and library technology resources
• providing and managing the districtwide automated library catalog and digital resources
• collaborating with the Technology Department on the use and support of District provided hardware and software through the library program
• assisting with the management and tracking of approved and adopted curriculum materials
• supporting building administrators with library staff hiring and evaluations to ensure their alignment to district goals and requirements
• supervising and directing daily tasks of the Library Media Technician
• providing clarification on Copyright, Fair Use, and Public Performance Rights
• coordinating district participation in the Alaska State Battle of the Books

The districtwide library media technician assists the library media coordinator in curating, maintaining, and circulating the physical collections and resources of Library Media Services.

Primary tasks include, but are not limited to:

• performing original and copy cataloging for all school libraries and adopted curriculum materials
• aiding in the configuration and maintenance of the district online library and resource management systems
• stocking, shelving, and maintaining  the Library Media Services kit collections
• preparing reporting and training materials to assist library staff and patrons
• training library substitutes in the limited use of the automated library catalog
• assisting district administration, staff, and families in locating and using LMS resources
• assisting in the tracking and distribution of adopted and supplemental curriculum materials 
• assisting the coordinator in providing support and training to the district library staff

The secondary librarian develops and implements an instructional program designed to cultivate information literacy skills and support the academic and leisure reading needs among middle and high school students. They provide resources and guidance to support the curriculum, empowering students to become proficient researchers, enthusiastic readers, critical thinkers, and ethical information users.

Primary tasks include, but are not limited to:

• teaching advanced research skills, including evaluating sources, using databases and other tech tools, and citing information
• co-teaching and collaborating with staff in designing and delivering lessons, instruction, and assessments of learning 
• designing and organizing workshops, presentations, and events that promote literacy, critical thinking, and cultural awareness by connecting students with authors, experts, and community resources
• guiding teaching staff  and secondary students in making the best use of both print and digital resources in the library and classroom
• identifying, reviewing, selecting, and organizing library resources relevant to middle and high school staff and students
• assigning and directing the daily tasks of the library assistant
• ensuring the on-site library program meets the mission, goals and objectives of the District

The elementary library associate supports student and staff learning by introducing them to library resources and guiding information searches. They also deliver instructional programs and activities that promote information literacy, using approved resources and collaborating with teachers and administrators.

Primary tasks include, but are not limited to:

• guiding students on how to locate and use library resources, including the catalog and databases
• conducting storytimes and read-alouds
• maintaining the library collection and performing daily circulation for visiting students and staff
• providing resources and support for classroom projects and the districtwide Walk to Read program
• coordinating book fairs and reading incentive programs
• identifying, reviewing, selecting and organizing library resources relevant to the elementary school academic and leisure reading needs
• ensuring the on-site library program meets the mission, goals and objectives of the District

The library assistant supports the secondary librarian with daily library operations, including circulation and organization, while also directly assisting middle and high school students and staff in effectively utilizing library resources.

Primary tasks include, but are not limited to:

• assisting with circulation, shelving, and organization of the library collection
• facilitating textbook resource requests through the automated catalog system
• processing new library materials and repairing damaged resources
• maintaining library services when the secondary librarian is working with classrooms and staff
• troubleshooting basic technology issues
