Medication Administration in Schools
OTC ADMINISTRATION
OTC medications should only be used as a last resort and all interventions should be used before resorting to medications, such as, having the student drink water, have a snack, or offer short rest. The student should go back to class after any intervention and if they return, you can resort to OTC medications.
Over-the-counter medications can be given by a Health Assistant/ULP without a call to the Nurse Manager, only if the parent gives verbal permission to the Health Assistant/ULP over the phone, even if the permissions are given in School Care. When a parent gives verbal permission, they have done the assessment and delegated the task. If a parent cannot be contacted for permission and the OTC medication has been approved in School Care, the nurse manager must be consulted before giving the medication so that they can do the assessment and delegate the medication.
Documentation: All permissions given by the parent/guardian must be documented in School Care.
- Name of parent or guardian that was contacted and gave permission.
- Date and Time of contact.
- Name of medication and dose to be given.
Parent/guardian permission will be documented by clicking the Notify Parent button while charting a medical episode. This is where the time and date of contact will be recorded, along with the name of the person contacted. Write a note describing the nature of the phone call and the permission obtained, medication and dose to be given, as well as the specifics of the conversation, what you told the parent/guardian.
If there is no parent/guardian permission given in School Care to administer an OTC medication, the OTC medication(s) can not be given. The parent will need to update the OTC approved list in School Care or fill out an OTC medication administration form. When that is done send it to your Nurse Manager so it can be updated to be able to give.
