Walter Hering
Hering Auditorium carries its namesake from Fairbanks’ own Walter Hering, a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy who during World War II saw action in the Pacific at Leyte Gulf and Okinawa. It was in April of 1945 that his ship, the Navy Destroyer USS Hazelwood came under attack from kamikaze pilots. While the ship was saved, LT CDR Hering sacrificed his life in the defense of freedom and country. Hering, well known in his home of Fairbanks and a graduate of Fairbanks High School, received the naming of the Lathrop High School auditorium in his honor, as it is known to this day.
