SMART, Students Making a Right Turn

8 AM-2 PM Monday-Friday

SMART is a voluntary program for secondary students who have been issued a long-term suspension or expulsion.

SMART Guidelines

  • SMART is a closed campus and district rules apply.
  • SMART Program-specific rules:
    • Strict No Electronic Devices policy:  No cell phones, Ipods, game systems, earbuds, headphones, Apple watches, etc
    • Closed campus (no off-campus lunches, no lunch deliveries)
    • Backpacks are NOT allowed
    • No outside drinks allowed.  Refillable water containers only.
    • Transportation will need to be provided by students.
  • Admission to SMART requires an intake appointment.

How does the SMART program meet my student's educational needs?

Students on long-term suspension will continue to remain students of the school that suspended them.  The student's teachers supply their schoolwork and/or Google classroom codes to the teacher at SMART.  The SMART staff coordinates this work and provides academic assistance. There is a certified teacher and a Special Education teacher on staff in the SMART program to ensure that the objectives are being met.

When a student is expelled, the student remains enrolled at the school they were expelled from until their case goes before the Board of Education.  The student's teachers supply their schoolwork and/or Google classroom codes to the teacher at SMART.  The SMART staff coordinates this work and provides academic assistance.  After the board upholds their expulsion, the student can then enroll as a SMART student. This means that all of the student's courses will be provided by the SMART program. The materials used by the SMART program can include traditional teacher-made lessons and/or correspondence work from one of the district's online vendors.

The SMART staff will make every effort to work with the courses the student is either coming out of at his/her regular school, or courses he/she might enroll in upon returning to the regular school.
