Wayne Horine: Head-Teacher + Mathematics

WH

Wayne has been a math teacher in the FNSBSD since 2007. He taught at Effie Kokrine until 2020. Wayne also coaches NYO and is a big part of the youth soccer community in Fairbanks.

Joy Grubis: Social Studies

Joy was raised in the Copper River Basin at Lower Tonsina in their family cabin.  After her father became disabled in a car accident, her family relocated to Anchorage where she graduated from Service High School. She went to college at University of Redlands, CA and completed her Teaching Credential through the TFA Program at UAF.  Joy started her teaching career in 1995 in Rural Alaska in the Inupiaq Village of Kiana for two years, one year at Nenana City Schools, and 26 years at West Valley High School.  She enjoys spending time with her family, friends, hiking, gardening, teaching, and enjoying the beauty of Alaskas’ great outdoors adventuring.  She is excited about being the Social Studies Teacher at Career Education Center this year and her goal is to provide opportunities for students to be successful through working toward graduating and help individual students make a plan to find their career pathway and prepare for the future.

Missy Gordon: Multi-Subject + Resource

Missy has worked in the FNSBSD since 1992.   She has been at CEC for over 10 years. Missy enjoys reading and crocheting.

Jaime James: English

Jaime has taught in the district since 1991. She is a true believer in lifelong learning and is certified in French, German, ESL, English, and Psychology. This is her 2nd year at CEC, and she appreciates the opportunity to assist students in navigating an alternative route to graduation. 

Outside of teaching, Jaime enjoys beekeeping, reading, and writing, and is also a licensed massage therapist.

Lori Werdin: Science

Lori has been teaching science since 2001, first in Kansas and now in Fairbanks. Before becoming a teacher, Lori worked in the Mental Health field and also served in the United States Peace Corps in Ghana, West Africa. Lori loves spending time with family, spending time outside, sewing, puzzles/games, and reading. 

Staci Hatcher

Staci is the Administrative Secretary for CEC. She keeps everything running smoothly!   She was born and raised in Fairbanks and graduated from UAF.  Staci has been working within the district for 20+ years.  She is an avid traveler, flying to theme parks or cruising to the Caribbean.  She enjoys being with family and her 2 dachshunds which are both 16 and spoiled rotten. 

Cheechako

Cheechako has been working as a therapy dog in high schools since 2019. He loves going for walks, sleeping, and food! His favorite treats are apples and peanut butter.
