Client-based VPN

  • If you're working from home and need access to more district resources than the web-based VPN can provide (it's highly recommended to start there), you can request VPN access. A Virtual Private Network allows your computer at home to be part of the district network.

     

    Step 1: Request VPN access through the work order system. Please include what you need access to.

    Please wait for the work order to be processed before proceeding!

     

    Step 2: Register a phone number for two-factor authentication (2FA)

    1. Download the DUO Mobile app from your smart phone’s app store
      1. If you do not wish to use the app, skip the next step and register a phone number to receive 2FA via phone call
    2. Open the app and allow notifications
    3. Next, check your district email for a registration link from DUO Security
    4. Follow the onscreen enrollment instructions for registering your number
      1. The registration email includes an enrollment guide with step by step instructions
      2. If you do not wish to use the app, choose Landline when asked to choose your authentication device type
        1. Enter your phone number when asked, then complete the registration

     

    Step 3: Install the VPN client (GlobalProtect) on your computer

    Mac

    1. Browse to https://vpn.k12northstar.org
    2. Log in with your domain credentials; f-number and password
    3. Click on GlobalProtect Agent in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
    4. Select Download Mac 32/64 bit GlobalProtect agent
    5. Run the installer once it finishes downloading
    6. During installation, your computer may tell you that a system extension is blocked
      1. Open System Preferences>Security and Privacy and click the Allow button for Palo Alto under the General tab
      2. The allow button will disappear and then you can close System Preferences
    7. If prompted, you can move the installer to the trash
    8. Finish/Close the installer
    9. GlobalProtect is now installed and active in the menu bar located in the upper-right corner of your screen
    10. Click on the GlobalProtect icon, enter the portal address vpn.k12northstar.org and click connect
    11. Authenticate with your f-number and password, then click connect
    12. Approve the 2FA with your DUO Mobile app or phone call

     

    Windows

    1. Browse to https://vpn.k12northstar.org
    2. Log in with your domain credentials; f-number and password
    3. Click on GlobalProtect Agent in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
    4. Select Download Windows 64 bit GlobalProtect agent (most likely) or Download Windows 32 bit GlobalProtect agent for those machines that are 32 bit
    5. Run the installer once it finishes downloading
    6. Finish/Close the installer
    7. GlobalProtect is now installed and active in the system tray located in the lower-right corner of your task bar; the little ^ (up arrow)
    8. Click on the GlobalProtect icon, enter the portal address vpn.k12northstar.org and click connect
    9. Authenticate with your f-number and password, then click connect
    10. Approve the 2FA with your DUO Mobile app or phone call
