Black History Month Contest

  • In celebration of Black History Month and the lifelong work and educational advocacy of Alaska Senator Bettye Davis, the NAACP in conjunction with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District invites all K-12 student to participate in this annual contest. 

    Contest Rules:

    • Grades K - 3: Label and color three (3) pictures of notable African Americans from one of these sites:
    • Grades 4 - 6: Make a poster featuring at least five (5) African Americans that made a difference in our lives
    • Grades 7 - 8: Submit a typewritten, original, 150-word essay
      • Include a notable African American in your essay and illustrate it with an orginal artwork.
    • Grades 9 - 10: Submit a typed, original, 250-word essay using this year's theme:  Be Creative Through Fine Arts Past or Present
      • Include a notable African American in your essay, works cited page and illustrate it with an orginal artwork.
    • Grades 11 - 12: Submit a typed, original 350-word essay using this year's theme:  Be Creative Through Fine Arts Past or Present
      • Include a notable African American in your essay, works cited page and illustrate it with an orginal artwork.

    Prizes:

    • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and honorable mention prizes will be awarded for each grade category.

    Return entries to the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, EEO Department, 520 5th Ave, Fairbanks, AK by 4:00 PM on Monday, February 12, 2019.
