Summer Meals Feed Good Nutrition to our Kids for Free!

  • Summer Meal

Are you worried about how you are going to feed your kids this summer when school is out?  Each year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like the FNSBSD Nutrition Services, to provide free meals to children during the summer!  With summer right around the corner, it’s time to think about keeping children healthy while school is out.

This summer, breakfast and lunch meals will be served at Ryan Middle School, from June 3 – June 27, on Mondays – Thursdays (no Fridays) serving breakfast from 8:15 – 9:15; serving lunch from 12:00 – 1:00.

There are no income requirements or registration. Anyone age 18 or younger may come to eat. For more information, contact Nutrition Services at 451-1004, or email

    • What is the Summer Food Service Program?  It is a federally-funded, state-administered program that reimburses providers who serve free healthy meals to children and teens in low-income areas during the summer when school is not in session.

    • Can my children take their meal with them and eat at home?  Unfortunately no.  Program regulations require that meals be consumed at the serving site however they can take ONE item (e.g. piece of fruit or carton of milk) home if they chose to.

    • Are there rules for behavior?  Yes there are rules but they are pretty simple.  Everyone is expected to clean up after themselves, be courteous, and treat everyone (including themselves) with respect.

    • What makes the meals healthy?  Our meals must contain grains, meat/meat alternate, fruits, vegetables, and fluid milk.  Meals taken must be made up of at least 3 of these items.
    • Who does the program serve? It serves children and teens age 18 and younger.

    • I operate an in-home daycare.  Can I bring my children to eat?  As long as the children meet the age requirements, yes you can.

    • Is there anything for an adult to eat when I bring my children?  Unfortunately we are not able to provide adults with meals.

    • Is there any paperwork I need to fill out before my children can eat?  There are no income requirements, paperwork,  or registration required.  Just bring the children and they can eat.

    • Am I required to bring my children or can they come on their own?  No you do not have to bring your children.  If you are comfortable with them getting themselves there and home, they can come to eat without your supervision.

    • What meals will be served?  We will serve breakfast 8:15 am - 9:15 am and lunch 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Monday through Thursday beginning June 3rd.

    • How long will you be serving meals?  We will serve meals Monday through Thursday, starting June 3rd and ending June 27th.

    • My child will attend a summer program at another school, can they eat breakfast and lunch at Ryan?  Yes they can.  All they need to do is show up during the serving time for breakfast and/or lunch.

    • Will there be any activities?  We will have free books available and are looking for people who can bring activities and/or information.

    • I want to help, what can I do?  Volunteer!  If you are skilled at an activity that would interest children and teens (e.g. arts and crafts, sports, music), please contact Amy Rouse.
