  • Community Meeting

Posted by Rebecca Hurbi on 11/15/2017

On November 15, 2017, the school district held a community informational meeting at Lathrop High. Bernie Sorenson from Regional Education Labs hosted the event.

    Event highlights:

Bernie introduced the timeline of the discipline review process. It will be year-long and changes won't be presented to the Board of Education until December 2018 or January 2019. Any changes approved by the Board would go into effect in the fall of 2019.

The review is about school climate and discipline and will take a deep look into policy and practices.

The goal of this process will be to conduct a truly collaborative stakeholder engagement process that will gather community perspectives and input to inform decisions on improving school climate and discipline. The goal is also to create:

    • Practices that meet the different needs of all students
    • Shared vision and policy alignment
    • Adopted discipline approaches that work to develop the conditions for student success and achievement K-12

There will be an advisory committee of 10-15 members from across the district and community including:

    • Students
    • Law enforcement
    • Parents and PTAs
    • Teachers
    • Counselors
    • Board of Education
    • School administrators

Input has already been received from 10 focus groups who were asked about school policy, safety, and discipline in the district.

The district leadership team will offer internal guidance, ensure that everything is feasible, and will be the team to implement any changes.

Parents and the community will have multiple opportunities for feedback in the form of surveys and community meetings.
