My name is Christine Cook and I am the school counselor at Barnette Magnet School. I have worked at Ticasuk Brown and Arctic Light Elementary schools, and worked in the Counseling Department at UAF for many years. School counselors are not able to provide therapeutic counseling services to students in school, but do work with students and families in challenging times, providing a safe place in the school and communicating/coordinating with other staff as needed. Students can meet with the counselor when they need help working through problems they might be having, whether social/emotional or academic. If students would like to see the counselor, all they have to do is tell their teacher, email me, fill out an I Want to See the Counselor form outside the library door, or complete the form located above.
As school counselor at Barnette, I present classroom guidance lessons to Kindergarten through 5th grade students weekly, 6th grade students every other week, and Middle School students at least once a month. I work with students individually for personal, social, or academic difficulties, and I sometimes meet with small groups to discuss various issues occurring in student's lives (social, emotional, or academic). In addition, I serve as a resource for parents, teachers, and other staff and can help connect families with district and community resources.
I am looking forward to a great year at Barnette and hope to promote a culture of positivity, respect, and responsibility. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
