It has come to our attention that some of our students may be organizing a walk out on Wednesday, March 6, in protest of the governor’s proposed state budget and in conjunction with the University of Alaska rally and march planned for later that day.
Our top priority is to support the academic and social emotional needs of our students while maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment for all.
Based on the information we have received, students plan to walk out at noon and meet by the flagpole.
While we support students in advocating for themselves, it's important to be aware that disrupting school operations can have consequences for students. Missing class will be counted as an unexcused absence. As always, parents may choose to contact the front office and have the absence excused.
Student athletes need to understand that a student must be in attendance for the full day of school to practice or participate in an activity. If athletes wish to participate in activities Wednesday evening they should plan to be at school all day Wednesday.
I encourage you to talk to your student(s) about how they may be feeling about proposed cuts to state public education funding and the importance of expressing themselves in appropriate ways at school and in effective ways to community decision-makers.
Please be aware that local media have reported on student protests in the past and may arrive on the scene of this event.
