  • School district to rework out-of-season activity rules

[News-Miner] The Fairbanks school district is looking at revamping its guidelines and requirements for out-of-season school activities. Last July, three West Valley High School students were hospitalized following a pre-season football conditioning activity at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Patty Center pool, during which they nearly drowned. Happy Last Week of School! We all made it through a 4th quarter we could never have imagined would happen. I’m so proud of our entire district for meeting head on the challenges of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Our staff have been amazing in their ability to completely change how they work. Our students have shown resilience in a time of lost connections with friends and school. And our families have partnered with us to create the best possible remote teaching and learning environment we could with the resources available. These past nine weeks will live in our memories for decades--another defining moment in each of our personal histories.

We are in the fourth week of school closure. Last week we rolled out remote learning, and this week we are providing grading guidelines. It is my hope that the grading guidelines will relieve stress for educators, families and students. The guidelines clarify the district’s teaching and learning goals for second semester at the elementary, middle and high school levels, with an emphasis on feedback. The guidelines also address questions about how final quarter and semester grades will be determined.
