  • Fairbanks School District plans safe reopening of schools for August

[Webcenter 11] The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is developing a Smart Start plan to open schools in August while taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Phase One of the Smart Start plan will be presented on July 1st. (Alex Bengel/KTVF) Using input from stakeholders, parents and members of the community, the district is examining every aspect of the school experience and adjust accordingly. In a message to the community on June 17th, district Superintendent Karen Gaborik explained that in conversation with the commissioner of the Department of Education, and the Department of Health and Human Services Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anne Zink, the borough has been designated a Green Zone, indicating comparatively low risk of spread. This designation is being used in the district’s planning.

Hello School District Family, The district is fully engaged in Smart Start planning for next school year. This is a daunting task, and our plan will impact the entire community. We have included a wide variety of stakeholders to be sure we consider the full spectrum of thoughts and perspectives. As we move through the planning process, I will update you on our progress. The most critical information I can share with you right now is this: As long as we are experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic, the best-case scenario for schools is a Low Risk environment. The Green Zone describes a Low Risk environment. It is not an environment with no risk where we can assume normal operating procedures. The Green Zone requires 6 feet of social distancing, and a variety of other precautions that will significantly impact how we deliver instruction.

Dear School District Family and Fairbanks Community, Events of this past week, fueled by the atrocity of George Floyd’s death, have consumed me. I find it very difficult to capture in words my thoughts about the unfathomable acts of bigotry, racism, cowardice and the lack of leadership. I’ve boomeranged back and forth between horror, guilt, anger, incredulousness, passion, sorrow, empathy, helplessness, heartbreak, and fear. I’ve reached out to co-workers, friends, and family close to home and across the country to hear their stories. I try to understand.

  • From Your District Leadership-May 18, 2020

Happy Last Week of School! We all made it through a 4th quarter we could never have imagined would happen. I’m so proud of our entire district for meeting head on the challenges of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Our staff have been amazing in their ability to completely change how they work. Our students have shown resilience in a time of lost connections with friends and school. And our families have partnered with us to create the best possible remote teaching and learning environment we could with the resources available. These past nine weeks will live in our memories for decades--another defining moment in each of our personal histories.
