  • Rights & Responsibilities

    Welcome back to school! It is the time of the year when we have a few items we need parents to review with their children. Your child will review the 2016-2017 Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Behavioral Consequences Handbook with his or her teacher. This handbook has many important sections including bus conduct, responsibilities of school authorities, student discipline, Responsible Technology Use Agreement, and disciplinary due process.

    The Fairbanks school district is anticipating a better first day of school for bus riders Wednesday compared with last year when the district was short about 30 drivers and students faced cancellations and delays.

  • West Valley and Barnette aim for history in academic competition

    In the high school competition discussion, there are some teams that stand out as dynasties — the De La Salle football team, the Carmel, Indiana girls swim team — teams who, year after year, find their students at the top of state podia. Now, West Valley High School and Barnette Magnet School are looking to create a dynasty of their own. Instead of swimming or tackling their way there, though, the schools hope to reach the top of their particular peak by analyzing primary sources.

  • Kraska named Alaska Secondary Principal of the Year

    West Valley High School Principal Shaun Kraska has been named Alaska Secondary School Principal of the Year. The Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals, which gives the award each year, announced the winner Thursday afternoon.
