FNSBSD Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Nancy Wagner
Dr. Nancy Wagner is the Superintendent of Schools for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District as of September 1, 2007. “I am very honored and excited to be the superintendent for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District,” stated Dr. Wagner. “I am impressed with the quality of the school system and the work the staff has done to improve student achievement.”
Prior to her move to Alaska, Dr. Wagner was the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in Kingsport City Schools in Tennessee for six years. Other experience includes K-12 Curriculum Supervisor and Secondary Supervisor in the Johnson City Schools, principal of Science Hill High School, and a physics and mathematics teacher.
“Of all the roles and responsibilities I have had in my career as an educator, I am most proud of those that ultimately resulted in increased student achievement. Improving student achievement is what we are all about.”
In 2007, Dr. Wagner was recognized as the Tennessee Supervisor of the Year. Other awards include the TSBA Award of Excellence in Educational Programs for “Benchmarking for Success in Mathematics” (2000) and the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the East Tennessee State University (1995).
Dr. Wagner received a Bachelors and Masters degree and an Ed.D. in Administration from East Tennessee State University, where she was also an adjunct faculty member with the university’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis for seventeen years.
In the Kingsport School District, Dr. Wagner led instructional leadership development, literacy and mathematics reform, job-embedded professional development, vertical teaming, alignment with state standards, implementation of an electronic curriculum management system, and development of partnerships with the university and regional education board, in addition to managing all aspects of curriculum and instruction.
Dr. Wagner has served as a consultant in brain-based learning workshops and technology applications, has presented educational programs for a variety of organizations, and has been a presenter at numerous conferences.
Community service includes leadership positions with United Way, “Leadership Kingsport,” Goodwill, and the Greater Kingsport Arts Council.
Dr. Wagner and her husband, Russell, have two adult children and four grandchildren.
