Changes made to substitute teacher requirements

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District has been experiencing a shortage of substitute teachers and is changing the education requirements effective January 2017.

Beginning next semester, the education qualification to be a substitute teacher will be reduced from a bachelor’s degree to an associate’s degree or 48 university credits. It is a change the district hopes will expand the pool of eligible substitutes.

“It’s a win-win situation for schools and applicants,” said Claire Morton, school district staffing and operations coordinator. “These positions provide a good wage for flexible and rewarding work and regardless of where you live, there is a school nearby in need of quality substitute teachers.”

Substitute teacher positions pay $18 per hour and provide flexibility to select work days and locations.

The district has over 900 regular teachers and approximately 20 to 30 teacher absences per day go unfilled. Schools struggle to fill openings and staffing holes can add disruption to the school day.

"Often when a substitute position goes unfilled, principals must become the sub for that vacancy," said Nordale Principal Brian Powell. "While it is always great to get back into the classroom, our schedule of observing staff members, meeting with parents, supporting students exhibiting challenging behaviors and working on district initiatives is impacted."

The school district human resources department is holding two outreach events to provide information and answer questions about applying for school district jobs.

On Saturday, Dec. 3, there will be a district HR table at the North Pole Plaza Holiday Bazaar from 10am until 5pm. And on Thursday, Dec. 8, HR staff will have an informational table at the UAF Wood Center from 10am until 4pm.
