  • Summer School

    The school district will be holding summer school at Effie Kokrine Charter School. There are several options for students to register for classes: Online enrichment; online diagnostic; and teacher-led, credit-recovery classes for English and math courses. All classes are $185 each and are non refundable. Classes begin June 1. All online classes must be finished by July 16. Teacher-led, credit-recovery classes finish June 28. See your school counselor for more information and a registration form.

  • Denali Elementary School's Thad Keener honored as BP Teacher of the Year

    Thad Keener, a fifth-grade teacher at Denali Elementary School in Fairbanks has been named BP Alaska Teacher of the Year. Keener, who has taught in Alaska for 21 years, received the award at a ceremony at Wedgewood Resort in Fairbanks Thursday evening. Before being announced as the statewide teacher of the year, he was honored as one of seven Teachers of Excellence from the Fairbanks area.

  • A field trip just outside the front door taps into the mystery of spring

    Peter Miller first tapped birch trees in spring as a fourth-grader at Pearl Creek Elementary School in Fairbanks. Now he's back at 25 with a degree in biology, volunteering to help teach second- and third-graders something about the science of the season: The birch trees that surround the school in the hills north of Fairbanks remain leafless, but they are far from lifeless.

  • A close-up of opera

    Local high school students had a chance on April 14 to hear some beautiful singing and get a close up look at what opera singers do. Performers from Opera Fairbanks visited the concert choirs of three local high schools — West Valley, North Pole and Lathrop — to perform arias in various opera styles and answer questions about making a career in the opera world.
