New Central Kitchen
The district’s new central kitchen facility had a ribbon-cutting ceremony in September 2009.
The new 25,000-quare-foot kitchen and warehouse facility is something the district has needed for a long time.
The old central kitchen facility was located on Eielson Air Force Base – not very central at all. The district had outgrown that 31-year-old kitchen. We needed more storage space as well as the capacity to make more lunches and breakfasts.
The new facility is not only more centrally-located to our schools,
it has nearly 10,000 square feet of storage space and is more energy efficient, which will save us money in the long run. With the state-of-the-art equipment in the new facility, our “lunch ladies” will be able to easily prepare the 5,000 lunches and 1,400 breakfasts that we serve to students daily.
We are grateful for our Congressional delegation in Washington, D.C., as well as the Alaska legislators who helped us get funding for the $13.5 million project.
