Why a preferred name?

The purpose for this request is to allow persons seeking to find your email address the ability to look for you in the directory and email you using the name by which you are commonly known.

For example, if your legal name is Robert Chang, but you are commonly known as Bobby (the name which you are addressed as by your co-workers and work contacts) then it would be valid to request Bobby Chang as your preferred name.

If, however, your legal name is Meg Jones, it is not considered valid to request Ms. Meg as a preferred name. Similarly, requests for a preferred name considered a "vanity" name or nickname will not be approved. i.e. "Tiny" or "Bubba" would not be immediately approved.
