Webmail

Q: How is the new Zimbra Webmail different from our current Communigate Webmail?

A: It is much easier to use than our current Webmail system. Also, it is more than just e-mail. It is a collaboration suite that contains an online calendar that you can share with your co-workers, parents and/or students. Zimbra will also allow you to use online file storage, task management, and much more. It can be set up to push out your e-mail and calendar directly to some smart phones.

Q: What is 'Webmail' as opposed to Thunderbird or Mac Mail?

A: Using your web browser (e.g. Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer) you can receive, send, and manage your e-mail. Webmail allows you to access your mail from any computer as long as you have an internet connection.
An e-mail client (e.g.Thunderbird or Mac Mail) is an application that is installed on your computer. The application must be configured to point to the server where your e-mail is stored. E-mail applications allow you to view your e-mails offline.

Q: Will I still have the same email address?

A: No, all e-mail addresses will change to "firstname.lastname@k12northstar.org" Your northstar.k12.ak.us e-mail address will continue to redirect to your new e-mail account for a period of about 1 year to allow time for you to distribute your new e-mail address. Go to the Staff Page on the district web site to view your "My Info." If you need to request a preferred name, visit the Preferred Name Portal to submit a request.

Q: Will my Contacts in Communigate Webmail be moved over to the new Zimbra Webmail?

A: Yes, your contacts in Communigate Webmail will be transferred over along with your e-mail messages and folders to the new Zimbra Webmail.

Q: Who do I call when I have a problem with Zimbra Webmail?

A: If you have questions on "how to" do something with Zimbra, please check the Tutorials page for detailed information. You can also contact your building's ITT, or contact Information Systems at 452-2000 x212. If you are having issues or problems with Zimbra, contact Network Services at 452-2000 x397.

Q: Can I send large files with Zimbra?

A: The current maximum file size that can be attached to an email is limited to 25 MB. For larger files, we suggest using the Briefcase functionality of Zimbra to post documents that you can then share.

Q: How much email can I store before my quota is reached?

A: For faculty and staff, storage capacity is 250 MB. It is important to note that this figure covers not just your email messages, but also any files you may have uploaded to the Briefcase while using the Zimbra collaboration suite.

Q: Can I still use Thunderbird? What about Outlook? iCal? Etc?

A: Zimbra collaboration suite is a combination of email, calendar, document sharing and other tools. Zimbra provides a web client that takes the place of Webmail when you click the Webmail button on any FNSBSD web page.

Q: What do I have to do to use Apple Mail with Zimbra? Thunderbird?

A: Zimbra works well with both Apple Mail and Thunderbird (on the Mac or PC.) To set up Apple Mail for Zimbra, follow these instructions. To set up Thunderbird for Zimbra, follow the instructions under Email Config Doc's for the specific email client you have.

Q: How do I sync my phone with my calendar? Can I access my email with my phone?

A: Zimbra makes it easy to access all of your collaboration tools from your mobile device. Whether you are using a BlackBerry, iPhone or other mobile, Zimbra provides a solution. If your smartphone OS offers Exchange Activesync integration, then you should be able to connect with Zimbra.

Q: How do I print an entire email from the web client?

A: To print using the Zimbra web client, be sure to always use the print button in the Zimbra toolbar instead of choosing File > Print in your browser. This will give you a much better, formatted email print out that contains your complete message.
