Full Stomachs = Full Minds
"When children fail to get sufficient dietary energy, particularly in the mornings, their cognitive capacity is impaired: their brains do not have sufficient fule for attention, concentration and learning."
Dr. J. Larry Brown, Harvard School of Public Health
Students who eat a healthy breakfast and lunch during the school day can reap the benefits of increased cognitive or mental abilities, enabling them to be more alert and pay better attention resulting in improved grades, test scores, attendance and behavior.
No expensive study is needed to prove that children who have not eaten cannot concentrate. Participating in the school meal program is one of many positive steps to support the educational process for our children.

Student Allergy Information
If your student has an allergy, please communicate the information with your school nurse. He or she will provide you the district process for documenting an allergy.
If your student has a food allergy, a licensed health provider and parent/guardian must complete the Medical Statement for Food Substitutions form attached below. This form is also available from your school nurse. This form must be submitted to nutrition services before a food substitution can be accommodated.

Lunch Loans
Nutrition Services offers breakfast and lunch in all of the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District schools. Our main funding source is revenue from the National School Lunch Program USDA federal funds. Nutrition Services must maintain a responsible financial approach in its operation to remain self-supporting. Extending lunch loans to students within the district can unduly burden the program. Therefore, the following Lunch Loan policy applies to meals provided for purchase:
Elementary Students may be extended up to two meal loans, after which time they can receive only a cold pack for no more than three days. Lunch loans are to be repaid immediately by the student and/or guardian. A student meal loan notice will be sent home with the student. Students exceeding the lunch loan policy are referred to their school administration.
NO lunch loans are avaiable for adults or guests or secondary students (grades 6 - 12) unless the sixth grade class is physically located at an elementary or charter school.
Nutrition Services reserves the right to reject payments via personal check if prior returned checks are received on an account.
Both positive and negative monetary balances on a student’s meal account at the end of the school year will automatically roll over to the new school year. A student’s account balance will also carry over if a student transfers to a different school within the district. If parents would like to have money refunded to them, please contact your school’s kitchen manager or contact Nutrtiion Services at foodservice@k12northstar.org (907) 451-1004.
We encourage you to make payments online at wwww.parentonline.net. Please visit the link on our website at http://www.k12northstar.org/departments/nutrition/parent-online-information for more information.
Thank you for your support of Nutrition Services!
