The top three spellers from each participating Interior Alaska school (not each district) are eligible to compete. Spellers must meet two basic requirements: (1) they must not have passed beyond the eighth grade at the time of their individual school finals, and (2) they must not have reached their 16th birthday on or before the date of the national finals. Normally the event includes spellers in grades 3-8. School winners will need to provide their own transportation, food, lodging, and adult escort.
