PHILOSOPHY

Music is an integral part of the core curriculum in which a student participates physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually, and aesthetically. This curriculum provides a musical foundation where students learn to express themselves through singing, playing instruments, listening, moving, and composing.   The skills attained through the study of music enhance the performance of the student in all areas of the curriculum.  

MISSION

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District will provide students a balanced, comprehensive, and sequential program of study in music.  The curriculum will include: 

• a wide variety of content in general music, chorus, band, orchestra, and alternative ensembles;
• relationships to other disciplines;
• accommodation for a variety of instructional methods;
• the development of analytical thinking through classroom participation, improvisation, composition, and performance;
• cooperative learning skills needed to participate in a musical group; 
• the use of current technology; and 
• a classroom environment that encourages lifelong appreciation and involvement in music.
