Curriculum
Alaska school districts have been called upon to adopt the state content and performance standards and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). Content standards describe what students should know and be able to do as a result of their public school experience. Performance standards indicate how well students at a particular age are expected to perform in reading, writing, and mathematics. GLEs are statements that define what all students should know and be able to do at the end of a given grade level. The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District has made a formal commitment to the standards. This commitment is reflected in the district’s adopted curricula.
The school district's curriculum goal is to provide all students with an excellent educational program that not only meets basic academic needs, but also sets high expectations and provides opportunities for each student to excel and develop individual talents.
Curriculum development and revision in the Fairbanks school district is an ongoing process that involves community, staff, students, and the School Board. The Board Curriculum Advisory Committee (BCAC) also provides input in the curriculum development process to reflect the perspectives, values, and beliefs of parents, the community, and the School Board. Curricular issues of interest to parents, students, and staff are also addressed by the BCAC prior to their being forwarded to the School Board for adoption.
