Excellence and Equity for All

Board Diversity Advisory Committee

  • The Fairbanks North Star Borough is a diverse community, and the school district embodies that diversity. In the '90s, the Board of Education organized a standing committee to address issues of racial respect in the district. Made up of eleven members, this committee advises the school board on matters pertaining to the education of students of all diversities. These dedicated community volunteers keep the board informed of specific concerns of the district's diverse population and help find ways to encourage minority students and parents to become involved in school activities.

    Public Service Announcements: Racial Respect

In 2008, the Board Diversity Advisory Committee (formerly the Board Ethnic Committee) championed a resolution promoting racial respect. The resolution challenged each school to renew its efforts to vigorously address racial respect by instituting programs that will educate students and staff on racial harassment and racial identity, build leadership capacity and institute a welcoming environment that does not tolerate racial slurs.

But the Board Diversity Committee wanted more than just a resolution. They wanted action -- action that could translate the resolution into meaningful change. The committee produced two public service announcements featuring students committed to carrying the message that acts of intolerance based on skin color, culture, bullying, religion, and appearance are hurtful and need to stop. These short, but powerful, public service announcements will be shared with all students and the community.
